Help, My Child Has Scoliosis

help my child has scoliosis

Scoliosis is a complicated condition with a variety of causes and often a confusing array of treatment options.

Scoliosis can be overwhelming to local families in the Mishawaka and Elkhart area, and you might be wondering what the next step should be for your child.

If you suspect your child has scoliosis, you have a family history of scoliosis, or your child is involved in very active sports involving the back such as dance or gymnastics, know the risks!

Early detection is key to helping prevent further pain and progression. A large curve in a young child is more likely to progress than a smaller curve in older children. The chart below shows a study (Lonstein and Carlson JBJS 1984) observing the the rates of the Cobb angle, a degree measurement of the abnormal spine curvature, as it progressed in younger and older children.

EQUALS the Progression Risk

Various Types of Scoliosis:

While Adolescent Scoliosis is the most common scoliosis, there are multiple types of scoliosis. Parents are also concerned about what is for there child regarding treatment, best and newest bracing, or surgery (when necessary).

Once a scoliosis diagnosis is confirmed, there are several different approaches depending on the child’s age and the severity of the spine, including physical therapy, bracing, and surgery.

The first step is a consultation with a qualified spinal expert, including a physical examination and x-rays.
