Asthma - Hopeful, helpful options...

Child with asthma and inhaler

Countless Causes

Asthma cases seem to be rising at an alarming rate, even in our Mishawaka, Osceola area. Some think it’s due to a combination of factors, especially the increase of chemicals in our environment.

These days, airtight, super-insulated homes can trap chemicals, molds, formaldehyde and other irritants. Even the increasing use of cesarean births, antibiotics and our fascination with germ killing have been cited.

If these factors were the only issue, why wouldn’t all children living in the same house and breathing the same air, suffer equally?

New Asthma Drugs may temporarily reduce symptoms but ignore any underlying nerve disturbance.

Nutritional Options that help some patients.

  • Eliminate milk products, substituting other calcium sources. You can use almond, rice, and coconut milk
  • Eat Foods without pesticides or added preservatives.  Preferably… organically grown fruits and vegetables as much as possible.
  • Eliminate Omega-6, polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils that might contain trans-fatty acids, all foods that might contain trans-fatty acids (such as deep-fried foods).
  • Use olive oil for cooking and for your main source of fat.
  • Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil, flax oil, coconut oil)
  • Always drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory tract secretions more fluid.
  • Try to eliminate (one at a time) wheat, corn, soy and sugar for six to eight weeks to see if the condition improves.
  • Cinnamon, ginger and turmeric have been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Percussive work done on the chest  and back can help to break up restricted muscles and takes pressure off nerves that develop in chronic asthma.  We offer this type of percussive and deep tissue massage.
  • Minimize contact with respiratory irritants, such as smoke, dust, molds, and volatile chemicals. Remove sources of offending materials from your home, install a good air filtration system, or consider moving if the air is generally bad where you live. Experiment with living in other locations: in high mountains, the desert, or near the seacoast. Asthma may improve greatly with a change of climate.

Chiropractic Connection – How?

The care we offer at Warren Chiropractic in Osceola is not a cure for Asthma.  However, there is research that shows a link between the spinal column, the nervous system and the respiratory system. This may be why many of our patients have mentioned improved breathing by consulting our practice.

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle used for breathing. Nerves that control each breath leave your brain and exit the spinal cord in the mid-neck (C3, C4 and C5) area. Spinal problems in this area can have a profound affect on the nerve supply to the diaphragm.

Reducing subluxations in the spine may help restore proper nervous system control of the lungs and improved function can begin.

More Research is Needed

In fact, research published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research documented the results experienced by 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care. The two-month study revealed that those under care saw a 45% decrease in the number of “attacks” and that 31% of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication.

All this from improved nervous system control of the lungs!
